PLAYBOY
established in Chicago in 1953
PLAYBOY, established in Chicago in 1953, is a globally influential lifestyle brand whose iconic rabbit-head symbol is recognized worldwide. The brand has evolved from a native cultural IP to a full apparel proposition, including menswear, leather goods, footwear and more over the course of more than seven decades.
It fuses the spirit of American casualwear with a modern smart-casual sensibility, an emphasis on men’s ready-to-wear for everyday environments and a balance of free-and-easy comfort with refined quality.
PLAYBOY operates in nearly 180 countries and regions, with an offline retail network in major commercial complexes worldwide. Its audience is the urban man who favors relaxed textures and values self-expression, across commuting, leisure, and other everyday occasions.
LUXE’s custom modular display cabinet system begins with the relaxed, free-spirited core of the brand. Rather than attaching the rabbit-head IP as a superficial symbol, the system embeds it as a spatial narrative thread within the cabinet structure—rejecting surface-level brand expression and achieving an 85% module reuse rate.
At the scheme finalization stage, we locked in the ergonomic benchmarks for the entire display system: 420 mm front-hanging depth, 600 mm island depth, and 1,450 mm hanging height, paired with 320 lux of Ra96 soft lighting. While smoothing the customer browsing journey and establishing an orderly display logic, these choices create an unhurried, relaxed atmosphere and keep the clothing itself at the center of the space.
Throughout the design, we aligned with PLAYBOY’s long-accumulated brand visual assets. The cabinets follow a clean, concise order of rectangular divisions and reject ornate carving and ostentatious layering, responding to the brand’s strategic shift towards a more minimalist new-gentleman identity. After repeated rounds of color-palette sampling and screening, the bronze-gold metal frame was specified in a warm, restrained, low-reflection tone. This avoids the glare of bright gold and sheds any deliberate, showy luxury, matching the mature, self-possessed, understated aesthetic of the brand’s core customers.
Standardized embedded bases for the rabbit mark are reserved in advance on the cabinets, storefront, and ceiling, making this classic symbol—one that has crossed eras—part of the space’s native structure. From the moment customers step through the door, they are immersed in a coherent, unified, quietly elegant PLAYBOY character.
Many menswear brands reach for dark colors and heavy materials to create maturity quickly, which can easily produce a rigid, oppressive atmosphere. The gentlemanly character PLAYBOY champions is relaxed and measured, not constrained by heavy tones. As a clothing display case manufacturer, LUXE breaks this formula through precise control of material ratios and lacquer finishes: low-saturation greige skin-feel wood veneer, matte bronze-gold metal profiles, and ultra-clear, softly transparent glass. Warm and cool qualities balance and temper each other, dissolving the pressure of large expanses of display cabinetry and realizing the brand’s core proposition of “mature, relaxed, modern gentleman".
Fabric texture and color are the very foundation through which menswear communicates style. Rather than following the industry’s usual practice of adding lighting after the fact, we brought the lighting system forward into the underlying R&D logic of the fixtures. This unified lighting paradigm faithfully reproduces the native texture and color of wool, knit, and woven fabrics, amplifying the appeal of the finished garments. The standardized light-trough structure also ensures that, as stores open at home and abroad, every location shares the same lighting atmosphere—so PLAYBOY’s distinctive relaxed character does not shift with the venue.
Rooted in the brand spirit, this modular display solution breaks through the limits imposed by site conditions. Commercial complexes in different countries and cities often differ sharply in ceiling height, column spacing, customer-flow structure, and district positioning. A flagship store in a core district, a refined community boutique, or a limited-time pop-up can all be arranged flexibly on the same base modules, while the storefront visual, display scale, lighting atmosphere, and presentation of the rabbit-head IP remain highly unified.
As an apparel store fit-out fixture supplier, we turn the brand’s offline experience from a designer’s one-off improvisation into a replicable, scalable retail-space standard. Wherever customers push open a door, they can recognize at a glance the effortless gentlemanly demeanor that is uniquely PLAYBOY.
Under the unified standard, ample compositional flexibility remains: individual stores can make moderate adjustments to module layout and auxiliary soft furnishings to suit local consumption habits. This balances the group’s global expansion efficiency with room for each store to adapt to its site, so an elegance spanning seven decades is delivered stably and coherently around the world.
Q&A
Q: When stores are later renovated or upgraded, which components of this modular display cabinet system can be reused?
A:The main hanging cabinet units, bronze-gold metal frames, pre-embedded integrated light-trough structures, and IP-logo mounting bases are all reusable, with an overall module reuse rate of up to 85%. Only some closure panels and small finishing pieces adapted to special layouts need to be added as required, greatly reducing renovation and store-reset costs and supporting the brand’s sustainable global expansion.
Q: Compared with ordinary commercial lighting, what does the Ra96 high-CRI lighting scheme improve most in menswear displays?
A: Beyond reproducing fabric texture, it strengthens R9 red rendering in particular, accurately restoring the warm, rich quality of menswear’s core palette—wine red, coffee brown, and navy. This keeps the visual focus firmly on the garments themselves while ensuring a consistent lighting atmosphere across every store worldwide.
Q: In high-traffic mall stores, is the combination of skin-feel wood veneer and bronze-gold metal easy to maintain?
A: The cabinets use a low-VOC water-based skin-feel lacquer with a 12° soft sheen and 2H surface hardness. It resists fingerprints and abrasion and is not prone to scratches or stains. We avoid high-gloss baked enamel, which shows dirt easily. Daily cleaning is simple, and even after long-term, high-frequency use, the finish does not quickly look worn, steadily maintaining the store’s premium quality.
